This year has been full of exciting opportunities for year 1. They started the year looking at themselves and the different types of homes that people and animals live in. During this topic we looked at cafes and the year 1 children had the opportunity to visit Stamford Art Centre café where they were given a tour and given the opportunity to sample a delicious toasted teacake.
“The toasted cake was amazing, I wanted more.”
After Christmas we began our topic of Emergency Emergency. We looked at all the different jobs and people that are available to help us in life. We started the topic off by looking at lifeguards and how they can help people when they go swimming. As part of this we visited the Stamford Leisure Pool where the children were given a water safety talk by the staff and the children were able to have a fun swimming session.
Then we moved on to the Police force and Ambulance service where the children were visited by some Police officers and Paramedics.
The children really enjoyed this experience, they were able to try on all the uniform and some children were given the experience of being locked in the back of the police van.
Towards the end of the Emergency Emergency topic we visited Stamford Fire station and the children were given a fire safety talk, a tour of the fire station and fire engine and the children were given the opportunity to squirt water from the massive fire hose.
“I enjoyed going to the fire station and trying on the uniform. My favourite part was squirting Mr Brockbank.”
Our final topic of the year was The Magical Zoo, where we learnt all about the different animals around the world. We also designed and made our own school bug hotel. During this topic the children have engaged with some fantastic opportunities and experiences. We have visited the Yorkshire Wildlife park and Rutland Water. A highlight of the year for a lot of the children was our visit from Scratchy the tawny owl.
I would like to wish all the children every success in year 2. They have all been a pleasure to teach :)

What a wonderful trip to Morrisons we had on Thursday morning!
We tried several Italian foods such as fresh Ciabatta with olive oil and fresh basil leaves, various cold pastas, Italian meats and cheeses including a blue cheese.
We tried Italian olives and Greek olives to compare them to.
The butchery department talked the children through the process of making minced beef, used for bolognaise and demonstrated making fresh burgers too.
Our children were also luckily enough to look at and touch various fresh fish including a squid! We have since tasted some cooked octopus in school which got very mixed reviews!
In school we learnt about how olive oil is made and we visited the oils aisle to look at the various choices on offer.
Morrisons provided cookies and a drink each in the café to conclude our visit which the children (and adults) really enjoyed.
